The importance of work experience whilst studying at university

With more people going to university and with fewer job opportunities available after graduation, there is a real importance to making sure that you stand out from other students by gaining some vital work experience.

Studying at university is a great opportunity; it allows you to expand on your knowledge and gain more of an understanding of the theory behind your subject. However, despite the interesting lectures and the informative seminars, there are just some things that cannot be taught in a classroom.

For any student at university, there is no better way to learn than to go out there and get some experience.

Whilst taking on a placement at Faith PR, I have developed a range of skills which has helped me get prepared for the real working world.

HERE’S HOW WORK EXPERIENCE CAN HELP YOU

TIME MANAGEMENT

It’s easy at university to fall into the trap of leaving work until the last minute. This is not possible in a real working environment when tasks need completing within a strict deadline. This allows you to organise and prioritise your work load which is definitely needed in both the working world and at university.

TYPES OF WORK

Unlike university, there is more to working life than writing literature reviews and preparing for an exam. In a working environment you are able to experience what truly goes on in an office and the various types of tasks that need completing. In one day at Faith PR I could be writing a blog, a press release, scheduling social media posts and speaking to journalists. This has been a huge learning curve as it’s allowed me to adapt my writing style and improve my confidence when speaking to the media.

HANDS ON LEARNING

Work experience is one of the most important things which can’t be taught at university. Whilst working at Faith PR, I am constantly learning and developing my skills, both in writing and my wider communication skills. Having the chance to work with real clients is a fantastic opportunity and gives you the experience a lecture theatre can’t.

GREAT FOR THE CV

Doing more than just attending your lectures looks great to prospective employers. It shows that you are hard working and willing to put the time in to learn and do more than just going to university.

Studying at university is definitely worthwhile, as coming out with a degree will show employers you’re intelligent, dedicated and committed. However, to truly stand out from your peers and impress, you need to gain some work experience. It gives you the opportunity to understand what is needed in the real life world and also helps you decide what you want to do in the future.
